Aziz rejects allegations of selling of arms for use in Syria

ISLAMABAD: The prime minister’s advisor on national security and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz on Tuesday rejected allegations of selling of arms for use in Syria or any change in Pakistan’s policy towards conflict in that country under Saudi pressure.

“Pakistan is a responsible state and sells arms only through legal mechanism and by abiding all relevant national and international regulations,” Aziz said in a statement on the floor of the National Assembly on Tuesday evening.

The advisor said that Pakistan’s policy towards Syria is based on principles. “Pakistan supports sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and cessation of hostilities by all sides,” he added.

Earlier in an interview, Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam denied reports that Saudi Arabia has shown interest in purchasing weapons from Pakistan to arm Syrian rebels.

The spokesperson described all media reports in this regard as baseless and absurd. She said that no such proposal is under consideration.
