BAGHDAD: At least 40 Syrian soldiers and Iraqis were shot dead on Monday in Iraq’s western province of Anbar who were being taken to the Syrian border by Iraqi authorities after they fled to Iraq to escape weekend fighting, Iraq army officials said.

The deceased were among 65 Syrian soldiers and staff who fled across the border into Iraq last Friday to escape an attack by anti-government rebels, officials said.

Unknown gunmen ambushed their convoy as they were being driven back to the border, they added.
