ISLAMABAD: Though Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi had earlier cancelled his scheduled visit to Pakistan in November last year, but first democratically elected President of Egypt is set to tour Pakistan on March 18, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported on Sunday.

Morsi in November last year was initially scheduled to visit Islamabad to attend the Developing Eight (D8) summit, but just before the summit kicked off on 22 November 2012, the Egyptian President decided to stay in Cairo to monitor the Egypt-mediated truce that brought an end to the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

However, Egyptian Vice President Mahmud Mekki represented his country at the summit on behalf of President Morsi.

President Morsi is paying a state visit to Pakistan on Monday on an invitation extended by President Asif Ali Zardari, the Foreign Office said on Saturday.

Morsi is the first civilian and democratically elected President of Egypt to visit Pakistan. The last visit of an Egyptian president to Pakistan was made by the late Gamal Abdel Nasser in the 1960s.

According to Foreign Office spokesman, during talks with President Asif Ali Zardari‚ the two sides will discuss bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues.

Egyptian President’s engagements would include one-on-one meeting with the President‚ followed by delegation level talks and banquet hosted by the President.

The two leaders are expected to hold extensive discussions on all areas of bilateral relations including regional and international issues of mutual interest. They would also be signing a number of agreements to promote cooperation in various fields.
