IRAQ-POLITICS-UNREST

BAGHDAD: A total of at least 2,417 people mostly civilians were killed and another 2,287 were injured in acts of terrorism and violence in Iraq in June, according to figures released on Tuesday by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The UN mission to Iraq said that those dead last month in the violence-plagued country include 1,531 civilians and 886 members of Iraq’s security forces.

In a statement, the UN’s envoy in Iraq Nikolay Mladenov said that this staggering number of civilian casualties in one month points to the urgent need for all to ensure that civilians are protected.

However, the data didn’t take into account casualties in the Anbar province in western Iraq, which is mostly controlled by armed Sunni radicals.
