MEXICO CITY: At least 13 people were killed while over 150 others sustained injuries when a truck loaded with fireworks exploded during a religious celebrations on Friday in the central Mexican’s rural village, officials said.

The explosion took place when a firework went astray and landed in the truck carrying “a significant amount” of other fireworks, they said.

The injured persons were being taken to several area hospitals, Jose Mateo Morales, director of the Tlaxcala state civil protection department said.

“They were in a procession, they were shooting off rockets and it exploded and fell onto the other ones,” Mateo Morales said. “It was very serious.”

The victims were marching in an annual procession in honor of Jesus Christ, the patron saint of Jesus Tepactepec, a village of about 1,000 people, he said.
