MediaAIOU to launch short-courses for working journalists

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has planned to launch short-courses for working journalists, both of print and electronic media, facilitating them to further strengthen their professional skill in relevant disciplines.

Eminent media personnel will be invited to conduct these short-courses, this was announced by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui while speaking at “Mulaqat series” held here on Wednesday at University’s main campuses.

A leading journalist Javed Siddique was the key-note speaker who shared with the participants his personal experience and eye-witness account about various events, he covered since 1976.

Dr Shahid Siddiqui hoped that the proposed short-courses of journalism will meet the professional needs of the working journalists. University’s Department of Mass Communication has already drafted contents of these courses, which he hoped will be introduced within next few months.

AIOU has provided bachelor, Master, M.Phil and PhD level education in journalism to a large number of youth since 1987, who are now working in various media Houses. The University has also recently launched two-year degree program in TV production.

The VC said he attached high importance to media, which has now emerged as most strong social institution to service the society through education.

AIOU is actively engaged in disseminating research-based knowledge to the public and the end users through the support the journalist community.

Dr Shahid Siddiqui further said a special quota for the working journalists was fixed in the recent year at the level of M.Phil and PhD to accommodate the working journalists. An annual dinner for the University’s Alumni Is also being arranged by the Department of Mass Communication later this month, he added.

He also spoke about the initiatives recently taken to bring qualitative improvement in the University’s overall working, particularly in the areas relating to quality education and students’ services.
