Baku, Azerbaijan:Martyrs of 20 January 1990 massacre which took place in Baku Azerbaijan are being remembered by the nation and several events are being held including one in the State News Agency (AZERTAC) offices on Saturday.
The staff of AZERTAC held a commemorative event on the 29th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy and the event started with one minute silence for the victims of great tragedy which is also known as massacre in Baku by Soviet forces.
In his speech, Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC Aslan Aslanov provided an insight into the history of the Black January events and said that the nation would never forget heroes who gave their lives for the freedom of the country.
In this impressive event, participants paid homage to martyrs of Black January, particularly those innocent civilians who were ruined under the tanks of former Soviet Union. Senseless and brutal crackdown of Soviet forces over civilian population resulted in indiscriminate killing of 137 civilians with hundreds wounded and many missing. The aggression is known as “Black January” or “January Massacre”.
Black January in Baku was in response to Azerbaijan’s drive to regain its independence. 20 January was terrible and sad day for Azerbaijan however it is also considered as milestone on the road to its freedom and independence.
