AfghanistanKarzai threatens not to sign security agreement if US strike continues

KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has strongly condemned the US drone strike in southern Afghanistan that left a minor child dead and two women injured, giving a warning that he will not sign the bilateral security agreement if such attacks continue.

The attack took place on Thursday when the US drone fired a missile on a home in Helmand Province of Afghanistan, killing a 2-year-old child and injuring two women.

“This attack shows that American forces are not respecting the life and safety of Afghan people’s houses,” Karzai said in the statement.

“For years, our innocent people have become victims of the war under the name of terrorism, and they have had no safety in their homes.”

The drone attack took place at a time when the US and Afghan authorities are locked in a stalemate over a security deal that will determine whether US troops will stay in the war-torn country after the NATO troops withdraw from Afghanistan next year.

The Afghan president said that he will not sign the bilateral security agreement until certain conditions are met, including a guarantee from the US that there will be no more raids on Afghan homes.

“If such operations continue, there will be no agreement,” Karzai added.
