KARACHI, Pakistan: Justice (retd) Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui on Friday took oath as the 31st Governor Sindh in Karachi after Dr Ishratul Ibad’s almost 14-year tenure ended.

The Chief Justice Sindh High Court (SHC) Justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah administered the oath to the new Sindh governor.

The Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Speaker Sindh Assembly Agha Siraj Durrani, Sindh Ministers, MNAs, MPAs, judges, members of lawyer fraternity and high civil and military officials also attended the oath-taking ceremony.

Justice (retd) Saeed-uz Zaman Siddiqui was appointed as new Sindh Governor on November 9 by President Mamnoon Hussain on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Justice Siddiqui had served as Chief Justice of Pakistan from July 1999 to January 2000. He had defied taking fresh oath under Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) after imposition of martial law in 1999.  As a consequence, he was forced to step down from his position, by the then military regime. Earlier, he had been SHC Chief Justice from November 5, 1990 to May 21, 1992.

Justice (retd) Saeed-uz Zaman Siddiqui replaced Dr Ishratul Ibad who served in office for about 14 years.

In a meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, the president and the prime minister decided to replace Ishratul Ibad with Justice (retd) Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui for Sindh governorship.
