ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prominent journalist Ahmed Noorani has been attacked and left with head injuries in Islamabad on Friday, reflecting the deteriorated situation in terms of journalists’ protection across the Country.

Ahmed Noorani is a renewed reporter, who works for ‘The News’, and has been in the limelight for a quiet while now for reporting high-profile stories.

Sources said that Ahmed Noorani was attacked outside the Urdu University near Zero Point in Islamabad. They said that six unknown men riding motorcycles intercepted the reporter and beaten him with iron rods and knives.

In their messages, the President Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) Mubarak Zeb Khan and President National Press Club (NPC) Shakeel Anjum strongly condemned the attack on Ahmed Noorani, and said that such cowardly acts cannot suppress the voice of truth.

They also demanded a swift action against the culprits and strict punishment for them as such initiatives are imperative to ensure the journalists’ protection in the future.

Separately, the Dispatch News Desk (DND) also voiced its concerns over back-to-back violent incidents against journalists.

In a statement, the Chief Editor DND Agha Iqrar Haroon said that those who have been involved in such heinous crimes should not be spared at all. He also appealed to the government to take stringent measures for journalists’ safety.

Earlier last month, senior journalist Matiullah Jan was also attacked by two motorcyclists in Islamabad when he was on his way to Bhara Kahu. The attackers smashed the windscreen of Mati Ullah Jan’s car; however, he remained unhurt.
