Indian elections 2014: Voting for final phase of Lok Sabha elections underway

NEW DELHI: The polling is underway for the final phase of the nine-phase Lok Sabha elections in India on Monday.

More than 60 million eligible voters are casting their votes in 41 constituencies in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to decide the fate of 606 candidates including the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi and Aam Adami Party leader Arvind Kejriwal in Varanasi and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav in Azamgarh.

Indian elections 2014: Voting for final phase of Lok Sabha elections underway

The Indian elections which began on April 7 will continue till May 12 during which some 814 million eligible voters will elect members of the 543-seat Lok Sabha in the world’s biggest elections.

The result of this election will be declared on May 16 before the 15th Lok Sabha completes its constitutional mandate on May 31, 2014.

The main contest in the elections is between the Congress Party, led by Rahul Gandhi, and main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the nationalist leader, Narendra Modi.

The polling for the first eight phases of Lok Sabha elections has already been held while nine and final phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections continues.
