Sonia, Rahul Gandhi offer resignation, party refuses to accept

NEW DELHI: The Indian Congress party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi offered on Monday to resign from their posts after the party’s worst ever electoral performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections; however, the party’s working committee refused to accept it.

The Congress won only 44 seats in the 543-member lower house of parliament, less than 1/10 required to be recognised as the main opposition group. On the other hand, Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 282 seats in parliament, 10 more than the majority required to rule.

“Sonia and Rahul offered to resign, but the Congress Working Committee rejected it,” a senior party leader from Punjab Amrinder Singh said.

The party’s working committee passed a unanimous resolution expressing full faith in the leadership of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.
