ISLAMABAD: India’s foreign secretary called his Islamabad counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani on Tuesday and apologised over the mistreatment of a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi.

Zargham Raza, first Secretary trade of Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi, was allegedly attacked and tortured by motorcyclists on Monday, triggering strong protest by the PHC with Indian authorities over the incident.

Raza was on his way to a local market when a group of 10 people assaulted him. Indian news channel reported that Raza was manhandled after his car was involved in an accident with a motorcycle.

Pakistan Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani conveyed Islamabad’s concerns to the Indian secretary over the mistreatment of its diplomat in Delhi.

According to sources, the Indian foreign secretary assured Islamabad that a thorough investigation of the incident would be carried out by Indian authorities.

The secretary also assured that security for Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi would be tightened to ensure any such incidents do not recur in the future.

One of the suspects involved in the incident has been taken into custody by Indian authorities, said the Indian foreign secretary.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan summoned Indian Deputy High Commissioner to Foreign Office wherein authorities lodge strong protest over manhandling of a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi

Pakistani authorities expressed their concern over the incident and demanded impartial inquiry to bringing the culprits to book.

Indian was told that the incident was violation of the Vienna Convention on protection of diplomats.

Pakistan has also demanded of India to provide protection to its diplomats.
