ISLAMABAD: The next 24 hours are crucial for Sarbajit Singh, an Indian jailed in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat on espionage charges, who was attacked by his inmates on Friday, doctors said.

Singh was immediately rushed to the Jinnah Hospital in Lahore for emergency medical aid after he received head injuries as he was attacked by his fellow inmates with “bricks and plates” when he came out for lunch from his special barrack in jail.

Meanwhile, a case of attempted murder has also been registered under section 324/24 against the main accused Aamir and Muddasir.

According to the Foreign Office spokesman the India High Commission has been granted counselor access to Singh.

The Assistant Superintendent and Jail Warden have been suspended. The Punjab Home Department has also ordered an inquiry into the attack.
