NEW YORK: Prime Ministe Nawaz Sharif has said he looked forward to meeting his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh to resume peace efforts between the two countries and boost up bilateral ties.

Nawaz said in a statement “I will be very happy to meet him and pick up the threads from where we left off in 1999.”

The prime ministers of Pakistan and India are expected to meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session on Sep 29.

Sharif said this in a brief comment following Indian Prime Minister’s statement in which he stated that he would meet the Pakistani leader on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session in New York.

The meeting between the two leaders would be their first since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif came to power and it takes place in the backdrop of recent tension along the Line of Control.

Meanwhile‚ Spokesperson‚ Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pakistan‚ Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry has said Pakistani and Indian Prime Ministers will discuss a whole range of issues in their meeting aimed at reducing tension and resumption of peace process.

Talking to newsmen in New York he said all issues between the two countries are important and would be discussed during the meeting. He hoped the meeting would set guidelines for resuming peace process.

The spokesperson said tackling terrorism would be effective‚ if the two countries work together.
