NEW DELHI: The Indian Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi is set to become the country’s next prime minister as Exit polls show that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) may form the government.
The nine-phase India’s Lok Sabha elections which began on April 7 concluded on May 12, setting a new record turnout at 66 percent. The result of this election will be declared on May 16 before the 15th Lok Sabha completes its constitutional mandate on May 31, 2014.
Out of the 543 seats in Lok Sabha, 272 are needed to form a majority government while according to the Exit polls, the BJP-led NDA is likely to secure 249 to 290 seats.
