NEW DELHI: The Indian Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi was elected as leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary party on Tuesday, paving the way to his becoming the country’s next prime minister.
His name was proposed by party patriarch LK Advani and seconded by other leaders including Murli Manohar Joshi, Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley at a meeting held in the central hall of Parliament on Tuesday.
The BJP won 282 seats in the 545-member Lok Sabha in the recent elections, becoming the first non-Congress party since independence to get a majority on its own.
