LUCKNOW: A leader of a regional political party based in the Indian northern Uttar Pradesh state was charged with sedition for raising slogans in favour of Pakistan, the India media citing police sources reported on Monday.

Police said that the Samajwadi Party leader Mehmood Alam was arrested in Shamli district of the Uttar Pradesh when he was found drunk and extorting money from the passers-by.

Alam raised objections and resisted his arrest at the police action. When overpowered by six police constables, he started raising pro-Pakistan and anti-Narendra Modi slogans.

“The SP leader started shouting on top of his voice ‘Pakistaan Zindabad’ and ‘Narendra Modi Murdabad’ after which local officials booked him for breach of peace,” an official said.

The top officials ordered stringent action against Alam whereas sedition charges were filed in an initial police complaint.
