Indian elections 2014: Voting for eighth phase of Lok Sabha elections underway

NEW DELHI: The polling for 64 seats of India’s Lok Sabha elections across seven states in eighth phase is underway on Wednesday, during which more than 95 million eligible voters are casting votes to elect their representatives.

These seats include 15 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 7 in Bihar, 5 in Uttarakhand, 4 in Himachal Pradesh, 6 in West Bengal and 2 in Jammu & Kashmir.

There are nearly 900 candidates in fray for this phase.

The Indian elections which began on April 7 will continue till May 12 during which some 814 million eligible voters will elect members of the 543-seat Lok Sabha in the world’s biggest elections.

The result of this election will be declared on May 16 before the 15th Lok Sabha completes its constitutional mandate on May 31, 2014.

The main contest in the elections is between the Congress Party, led by Rahul Gandhi, and main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the nationalist leader, Narendra Modi.

The polling for the first seven phases of Lok Sabha elections has already been held while eighth phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections continues.
