Congress accepts defeat as early Indian election results show landslide win for BJP

NEW DELHI: The early election results of the Indian parliamentary elections showed a landslide win for the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday while the ruling Congress party accepted defeat and said that it was ready to play its role as the opposition.

“We accept defeat. We are ready to sit in the opposition,” senior Congress leader and spokesman Rajeev Shukla told reporters at party headquarters in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, the counting of votes in the Lok Sabha elections began on Friday.

In a statement, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) V. S. Sampath said that counting will begin with postal ballots first followed by Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) later.

The counting is likely to be completed in the evening but trends will be available at noon.
