LAHORE: A petition has been submitted by one Lahori Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi in Lahore High Court pleading for reopening of Bhagat Singh case who was hanged in 1930 in district jail Lahore on Ferozpur Road by British Raj in a politicised case of attempt of murdering Britishers, reports Dispatch Desk Desk (DND).

Petitioner Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi has made a submission before the Lahore High Court that the freedom fighter be legally declared innocent of the charges on which he was hanged.

In his petition, Qureshi has argued that Bhagat Singh was a freedom fighter who was first awarded life imprisonment but the British government later changed that to a death sentence.

The petitioner maintained that Bhagat Singh was sentenced in a case which was hurried and one sided and that the case should be re-opened so that Bhagat Singh can be declared innocent.

It may be mentioned that Baghat Singh was one of the greatest freedom fighter of subcontinent and on 8 April 1929, he threw two bombs inside the Legislative Assembly rushing from Visitor’s Gallery. The smoke from the bomb filled the Hall and they shouted slogans of “Inquilab Zindabad!” ( “Long Live the Revolution!”). He was arrested and tried and was hanged on 23 March 1931 in Lahore district jail. Political record of that era claimed that Ghandi did not try to save Baghat Singh although his case was controversial and British Raj contacted Mohan Das Ghandi for his opinion before announcing the decision.
