PATNA: At least 35 persons were killed and over 40 others injured when an Indian express train ran over them as they were crossing the tracks to visit a nearby temple in the Indian state of Bihar, local officials said.

The accident took place in Saharsa district in the state of Bihar, some 200 kilometres from the state capital Patna.

The passengers, mostly Hindu pilgrims, had just alighted from a local train at Dhamara Ghat station and were on their way to a temple in Saharsa district.

Following the incident, angry mobs started attacking the Rajya Rani Express, an interstate passenger train, and set fire to several carriages. They have also attacked a nearby train station, local police said.
