18 killed, several injured in India stampede

MUMBAI: At least 18 persons were killed and more than 50 others sustained injuries during a stampede on occasion of burial of the Dawoodi Bohra Community spiritual leader Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin in Mumbai early Saturday.

The officials said that Saturday’s incident occurred late in the night in Malabar Hill area where an overwhelming crowd had gathered to pay last respect to the departed spiritual leader.

Syedna Burhanuddin, who was considered to be the 52nd Dai of the community and greatly revered by the Bohris, passed away on Friday due to a heart attack at the age of 102 at Saifee Mahal, his residence in Malabar Hill in south Mumbai.
