NEW DELHI: In response to reports that the US spy agency was allowed in 2010 to carry out surveillance on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party, India on Wednesday summoned senior US diplomats in New Delhi to lodge a protest over the issue.

According to classified documents reportedly leaked by whistle-blower Edward Snowden and published by Washington Post on Monday revealed that the BJP was listed along with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood among outfits for whom the National Security Agency (NSA) had sought permission to carry out surveillance.

The Indian government called it “ totally unacceptable” and sought an assurance from the United States that it won’t happen again.

The US does not currently have an ambassador in New Delhi and its most senior diplomat is the charge d’affaires.
