NAWABSHAH: Unknown gunmen shot dead a prominent local religious leader Yaqoob Qadri in Nawabshah, prompting to protests and strong condemnation by many religious organizations.

Police said that two motorbike riding attackers opened fire at Yaqoob Qadri in Mohni Bazaar area of the city and fled away, leaving religious leader injured seriously.

Yaqoob Qadri was rushed to People’s Medical Center immediately but he succumbed injuries during treatment there, added the police. His funeral prayer will be performed at Police Ground in Nawabshah after Friday’s prayer.

Feared and tension gripped many neighboring areas after the incident.

According to reports, armed persons opened aerial firing in different parts of the city and forcefully closed shops and markets after Yaqoob Qadri’s demise.

Many religious organizations have strongly condemned killing of Yaqoob Qadri.
