DAKAR: Some identified gunmen has kidnapped seven French nationals in northern Cameroon near the Nigerian border on Tuesday, Radio France International reported.

French embassy officials in Yaounde has confirmed that some gunmen came on motorbikes and abducted seven French national tourists. The miscreants took the hostages into Nigeria, the station said.

According to reports, the kidnapping took place at around 7 a.m. in a small village about 10 km (six miles) from the Nigerian border in the north of the country.

The incident has occurred when a French-led intervention has been placed in Mali to oust Islamist rebels. Eight French citizens are being held in the Sahel region by Islamist groups.
