ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday congratulated President-elect of the United States Donald J. Trump on his historic victory in the US Presidential Elections 2016 held on November 8.

The 70-year-old Republican Donald Trump won the 45th Presidential Elections in the United States, becoming the 45th US President. He secured 289 electoral votes while his rival Democrat Hillary Clinton achieved 218 votes.

In his message, the prime minister said that Donald Trump’s election was indeed the triumph of the American people and their enduring faith in the ideals of democracy, freedom, human rights, and free enterprise.

Sharif said that Pakistan and the United States had enjoyed a strategic partnership, rooted in the shared ideals of freedom, democracy, mutual respect, and commonality of interests.

The prime minister said that a strong partnership between the two countries remained critical to promoting and sustaining peace, security and stability in the wider region, continue to underpin the resilience in Pakistan-US ties.

Nawaz Sharif wished to closely working with the new leadership of the United States to bring the two countries closer and making bilateral partnership an important vehicle for the realization of peace, security and prosperity in the region and beyond.

While addressing his supporters at campaign headquarters in New York City, Donald Trump sought to reassure people around the world that his presidency would be based on common ground not hostility.

“While we will always put America’s interests first, we will deal fairly with everyone — with everyone. We will seek common ground, not hostility,” Donald Trump said.
