RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Thursday voiced the resolve to steer the Pakistan Railways out of deficit.

Talking to media representatives in Rawalpindi, the railways minister said deficit of Pakistan Railways would be eliminated in one year.

Sheikh Rashid pointed out that railways was currently faced with the annual deficit of Rs 40 to 42 billion.

The minister said the network of Pakistan Railways would be expanded to the backward areas of the Country in order to provide the people there with better travelling facilities.

“We are upgrading several old trains. Rehman Baba Express will start service from Peshawar to Karachi next week,” he said. “We have prepared two trains during the 20 days,” he added.

Sheikh Rashid said proposals would be submitted with the prime minister for bringing improvement in the railways. He said most of the trains of Railways required upgradation.

The railways minister further said they were pursuing a zero tolerance policy against corruption. He assured the dwellers of Katchi Abadis on the railways land would not be disturbed.
