Government of PakistanPresident Arif Alvi announces April 30 as elections date in Punjab

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: President Dr. Arif Alvi has announced the date of April 30, 2023 (Sunday) for holding the general elections of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab.

The president announced the date after considering the dates proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ECP had proposed a poll date between April 30 to May 7, 2023 for holding general elections of Provincial Assembly of Punjab, and had further suggested to hold elections preferably on a Sunday.

Earlier on March 1, the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a 3-2 verdict ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within 90 days.

The Apex Court ruled that after consultation with the ECP, the president would announce the date for Punjab elections as the Governor didn’t dissolve the provincial assembly while in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Governor was bound to consult with ECP to announce the date.
