ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and Lt General Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).

In a Twitter statement on Thursday, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the prime minister made the decision to make the appointments using his Constitutional powers.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that a Summary in this regard has been forwarded to President Dr. Arif Alvi.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Pakistan Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) had forwarded the Summary to the Ministry of Defence for selection of the CJCSC and COAS, containing names of six senior most Lieutenant Generals including Lt General Asim Munir, Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Lt General Azhar Abbas, Lt General Numan Mahmud, Lt General Faiz Hameed, and Lt General Muhammad Amir.

It’s worth noting that the incumbent Chairman JCSC Lt General Nadeem Raza is set to retire on November 27, 2022 and the COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa on November 29.
