Government of PakistanPM Imran Khan welcomes US-Taliban peace deal, also cautions against spoilers

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that we welcome the Doha accord signed on Saturday between the United States and the Afghan Taliban as it’s the start of a peace & reconciliation process to end decades of war & suffering of the Afghan people.

“I have always maintained that a political solution, no matter how complex, is the only meaningful path to peace,” Imran Khan said in a tweet.

Imran Khan said that now all stakeholders have to ensure that spoilers are kept at bay.

“My prayers for peace for the Afghan people who have suffered four decades of bloodshed,” he said.

The prime minister said that Pakistan is committed to playing its role in ensuring the agreement holds & succeeds in bringing peace to Afghanistan.

The peace agreement was signed by the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and the Afghan Taliban Deputy Leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in Doha on February 29, 2020.

The United States and the Afghan Taliban signed the landmark peace agreement in Doha bringing an end to the two-decades-old war in Afghanistan and paved the way for intra-Afghan dialogue, and which obliged the US and its allies to withdraw all of their forces from the Country within the next 14 months.

Under the agreement, the Afghan Taliban will not allow any of its members, other individual or groups including al-Qaeda to use the soil of Afghanistan to threaten the security of the United States and its allies.

The Taliban will also not provide visas, passports, travel permits or other legal documents to those who pose a threat to the security of the US and its allies to enter Afghanistan.

In his statement, the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also described today as a historic day in the advancement of the ultimate aim for peace & reconciliation in Afghanistan.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Pakistan has played a committed & decisive role in the realization of the Afghan peace deal. He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision has consistently championed diplomacy over a military solution.

“Pakistan will continue to support a stable, united & democratic Afghanistan. Peace and stability in South Asia is critical and Pakistan will keep leading & sustaining efforts for peace & stability,” he said.
