ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk on Wednesday emphasized the need for increased coordination between federal and provincial governments for undertaking measures to protect and conserve the natural environment, and to combat adverse impacts of Climate Change on Pakistan.

The emphasize was made when he was briefed about the functions and performance of the Ministry of Climate Change at PM’s Office in Islamabad.

The briefing was attended by the Minister for Climate Change Muhammad Yusuf Shaikh, the Secretary to Prime Minister, the Secretary Climate Change Division, the Additional Secretary to Prime Minister and senior officials of Climate Change Division.

The Secretary Climate Change Division briefed the prime minister regarding mandate, functions and performance of the ministry.

It was informed that Pakistan is signatory to 14 international treaties, conventions and protocols related to environmental protection and Climate Change. Highlighting the importance of the subject, it was informed that Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the adverse impacts of Climate Change.

It was further informed that the Climate Change Division is implementing 6 ongoing development projects for which an amount of more than Rs. 800 million has been allocated for the current financial year.

While briefing about the achievements of the ministry, the secretary climate change informed that 26.77 million saplings have been planted so far under the “Green Pakistan Program” out of a total of 100 million targeted for the next five years.

It was also informed that 250 small structures to mitigate impacts of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), 50 weather stations and 408 river discharge sensors would be established under GLOF project, which is being implemented in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
