Government of PakistanRejection of Panama review petitions not end of world: Barrister Zafarullah

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: While responding to the dismissal of Panama review petitions by the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister’s Advisor Barrister Zafarullah Khan on Friday said it wasn’t the end of the world, and journey of sacrifices for democracy would continue.

“Decisions came against us and we went in review but our view point was not accepted. So, this is not end of the world. The journey of sacrifices would continue and time would come when democracy would strengthen and people would again repose confidence in Nawaz Sharif,” the advisor said talking to media at Supreme Court in Islamabad.

Earlier the five member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Asif Saeed in its short judgement dismissed all review petitions against its verdict in Panama Papers Case announced on July 28.

“People of Pakistan would decide, how they see this decision as nation still remembers decisions in Maulvi Tameezuddin case, Z A Bhutto case and Zafar Ali Shah case,” Barrister Zafarullah said in reference to Supreme Court’s decision.

“As far as we are concerned we shall accept the decision and endeavor to improve the system,” he added.

Barrister Zafarullah said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) believed in supremacy of the constitution and smooth functioning of the system.

“We are not anarchists. We believe in constitution and the constitution says justice should be done,” the advisor said.

“We implemented the previous decision of the court and accepted this one also. But, this is not end of the world. Respect for the court orders is mandatory but understanding it as correct or incorrect is our right.”

The advisor contested that when a member of lower judiciary would be monitored on day to day basis by a superior judge, would he be comfortable to freely reach a conclusion.

“This is a unique. We do not see any instance in last 70 years when the apex court had deputed a monitoring judge for any specific case,” he said.

Barrister Zafarullah further said that when the Parliament makes any such law, it is observed by the court as a person specific legislation but, in this case the decision of appointing a monitoring judge is also person specific.
