ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: President Mamnoon Hussain has assured Pakistan’s strong support for regional cooperation, and urged the new Secretary General South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Amjad Hussain Sial to accelerate the pace of SAARC process.
In a meeting with the new SAARC secretary general who met him in Islamabad during his three-visit to Pakistan from May 22 to 24, the president reiterated that Pakistan attaches great importance to the intensification of interaction among member states for the realization of SAARC objectives as enshrined in its Charter.
The SAARC secretary general also held separate meetings with the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and the Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, the Foreign Office said in a press release issued on Thursday.
During the meeting with the SAARC secretary general, the adviser reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional cooperation under the umbrella of SAARC for promoting welfare of the people of South Asia.
The adviser said that SAARC has a huge potential, which unfortunately remains untapped due to several challenges.
Hailing from Pakistan, Amjad Hussain Sial assumed charge as the 13th Secretary General of SAARC in March 2017.
