ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan is ready to play its part for revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

In his statement on the SAARC Charter Day being observed on Thursday, the prime minister said that the Day is a reminder of vast untapped potential of regional development, connectivity and cooperation among countries of South Asia.

Shahbaz Sharif said that the people of SAARC Countries are victims of these missed opportunities.

The SAARC Charter Day is observed every year on December 8 to mark the signing of its Charter in 1985 by the leaders of Member Countries at the First SAARC Summit held in Dhaka.

The SAARC comprises of eight Member States including Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Bhutan, and Nepal.

Its Secretariat was set up in Kathmandu on January 17, 1987.

The primate objective of the Association is to work collectively to promote the welfare of the peoples of South Asia and to improve their standard of living through social progress and economic development.
