ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday underlined the need of concerted efforts from Pakistan and Iran to achieve the target of $5 billion in the bilateral trade as soon as possible.

In a meeting with the visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Dr. Javad Zarif who called on him in Islamabad to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues, the prime minister expressed satisfaction at the increasing high level exchanges between Pakistan and Iran to strengthen bilateral cooperation in diverse fields.

The prime minister hoped that the two Countries will continue to expand economic interaction for promoting mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, energy and connectivity.

Nawaz Sharif also conveyed Pakistan’s serious condolences to the government and people of Iran over the tragic incident that took place in the Iranian province of Sistan-Balochistan involving martyrdom of 11 Iranian border security guards on April 26, 2017.

In his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister thanked the prime minister and the government of Pakistan for continued efforts for strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing interaction in all areas including trade and economic cooperation as well as border and security issues.

The Iranian foreign minister also conveyed the desire of the Iranian leadership and the government for continued efforts for growth in bilateral ties.

Iranian FM meets COAS

Separately, the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif also met the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in Rawalpindi and discussed issues of bilateral interest and regional security.

In a press release, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that during the meeting, both sides agreed on improving bilateral boarder coordination to deny any space to the terrorists.

The visiting dignitary appreciated the efforts of Pakistan and Pakistan army against terrorism.

The COAS said that Pakistan is committed to have lasting relations with Iran and will keep up its efforts to reduce friction amongst brotherly Muslim Countries.

The Air Chief reiterated his resolve to further enhance the existing bilateral cooperation between the two strategic partners. Commander AFCENT appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and vowed to enhance cooperation in the fields of joint training, mutual exercises and military to military collaboration. In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
