ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Minister for Water Resources Syed Javed Ali Shah Thursday said the government was expecting production of 20,988 megawatt (MW) electricity per day in last week of December 2017 against 16,650MW demand.
In a written reply to the National Assembly, he said “the ministry is expecting average 18,678 MW electricity production per day against the demand of 12,625 while production of 20,988 MW power is expected during the peak time against the demand of 16,650 MW.”
As per the calculation, the country would have around 6,053 MW surplus power during normal times, while 4,338MW during the peak hours by the year end, as a number of power generation projects are completing at a fast pace.
Answering another question, he said Dasu Hydropower project was a run-off-river project and did not have a storage reservoir.
It would have a total installed capacity of 4,320MW which would be completed in two stages, adding “Stage-I with installed capacity of 2,160MW is in implementation phase and will generate 12.22 billion units per annum. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2022.”
Commenting on Diamer Bhasha dam, the Minister said construction of main dam could not be started as yet due to non-arrangement of finances.
However, land acquisition, construction of infrastructure and preliminary work at Thor Valley colony and Composite Model Village-II at Harpan Das are in process, he added.
As per timeline given in PC-I (Dam Part), the dam will be operational in about 10 years after commencement of the construction work.
