Government of PakistanFederal, provincial governments to ensure security of political leaders: Minister

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Information Minister Barrister Ali Zafar on Tuesday said both the federal and provincial governments would provide necessary security to the political leaders.

His remarks came when asked by media reporters in Islamabad about the threats faced by the political leaders.

On Monday, the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) revealed that the Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, leaders of Awami National Party (ANP) Asfandyar Wali and Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Akram Khan Durrani, the Chief of Allah-o-Akbar Tehreek Hafiz Saeed’s son Talha Saeed among six personalities could be targeted by terrorists during the ongoing election campaign.

While briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, the NACTA Director Obaid Farooq said that the authority had forwarded 12 threat alerts to the federal interior and provincial home ministries as well as law enforcement agencies.

Talking about the upcoming polls, the information minister once again made it clear that the general elections 2018 would be held as per the schedule.

The minister said it was the Constitutional responsibility of the caretaker government to cooperate with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the smooth conduct of elections.

To a question about the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, the information minister pointed out that they would land in Lahore, and responsibility rested with the provincial government to ensure law and order situation on that particular day.
