SIALKOT, Pakistan: The Federal Minister for Defence, Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif said on Monday the government was striving to remove the darkness of ignorance from society by promoting education sector.

While addressing the participants of laptops distribution ceremony at Government College Women University (GCWU) in Sialkot, he termed the laptop as a big weapon for students to fight against terrorism.

The minister stressed the need for promoting knowledge-based education and grooming of students to make the country developed and forward-looking. He said that Pakistan could never make progress without the promotion of quality education and easy access of every individual to quality education.

Khawaja Asif said that students were the future of country and the government was providing them maximum facilities, enabling them to serve the nation and the country in a better way. He urged the teachers and parents to also focus on character building of students.

The minister also stressed for ending illiteracy at grass roots level to bring about radical changes in every sphere of life.

Later, the federal minister distributed 432 laptops among students.

Earlier, in another laptops distribution ceremony, Khawaja Asif distributed 470 laptops among the brilliant students of the Government College of Technology Sialkot.

MLA-AJK Ch. Muhammad Ishaq, MPAs Rana Liaqat Ali, Ch. Muhammad Ikram, Mrs. Gull Naz Pasha, Zulfiqar Ghauri, Director General HEC (Anwaar Amjad), Idrees Ahmed Bajwa (President PML-N Sialkot District), Shujaat Ali Pasha (general Secretary PML-N Sialkot District), Nabeel Lone (Chairman District Baitul Maal Committee Sialkot) and others were also present on the occasion.

On the sidelines of Bahrain International Airshow, Commander of Ninth Air Force (US Air Forces Central Command — AFCENT), Lieutenant General Derek France called on Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force. The Air Chief reiterated his resolve to further enhance the existing bilateral cooperation between the two strategic partners. Commander AFCENT appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in promoting regional peace and vowed to enhance cooperation in the fields of joint training, mutual exercises and military to military collaboration. In a separate meeting, Chief of the Air Staff also called on Field Marshal Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Commander-in-Chief of the Bahrain Defence Force.
