Lahore, Pakistan: The Philosophy Department of Government College University (GCU) has opened new admissions, offering an opportunity to youth to be part of a legacy of forward thinking that has produced exceptional philosophers and thinkers, including the Poet of the Nation–Dr Muhammad Allam Iqbal.
The department was established shortly after the college’s founding in 1868.
It boasts a legacy of distinguished scholars and intellectuals, including figures like Professor Thomas Arnold, Professor S.G. Brett, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and Professor L.P. Saunders.
Professor Qazi M. Aslam, Dr. C.A. Qadir, Dr. Hamid-ud-Din, Professor M. Saeed Sheikh, Professor B.H. Siddiqui, Professor Shahid Husain, and Prof Mirza Athar Baig also contributed significantly to the department’s history.
Evolution and Expansion:
In 2005, the department expanded its scope to incorporate interdisciplinary knowledge and was renamed the Department of Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies.
The department’s nomenclature changed again in 2023 to Department of Philosophy and Liberal Arts, aligning with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan’s new undergraduate policy.
The department has consistently embraced innovative teaching methods, including the use of original texts, dialogue, and international teaching strategies.
The Brett Philosophical Society, founded in the 19th century, remains a significant platform for students to engage with philosophical thought.
