ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has called for an enhanced international community’s engagement to prevent a humanitarian crisis and economic meltdown in Afghanistan.

While addressing the virtual meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the neighbouring Countries of Afghanistan on Wednesday, Qureshi said that if a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan is prevented and economic stability is assured, then peace can be consolidated and a mass exodus precluded.

The foreign minister renewed diplomatic and international presence in the Country would reassure the Afghan people.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the urgent provision of humanitarian assistance, with UN and its various agencies playing a lead role, would reinforce the process of confidence-building.

The foreign minister hoped for an early stabilization of the political situation in Afghanistan saying this will lead to normalcy. He stressed the new situation requires discarding old lenses, developing new insights, and proceeding with a realistic and pragmatic approach.

Qureshi said that Afghanistan must be enabled to get through this testing time and realize its full potential to advance the common vision of a peaceful, stable, prosperous, and interconnected region.

Chaired by the Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the virtual meeting on the Afghan issue was attended by China, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The meeting reviewed the evolving situation in Afghanistan to address common challenges and realize emerging opportunities to ensure regional stability and prosperity.

It provided an opportunity to neighbors of Afghanistan to work together for the shared objective of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, which is essential to forge strong economic linkages and realize connectivity agenda.
