ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan has welcomed the announcement of preliminary results of the Afghan Presidential Elections held on September 28, 2019.

“We note that the final results would be announced after completion of adjudication process within the stipulated time as per Afghan electoral laws,” the Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui in a statement on Monday.

“We support Afghanistan’s democratic process and acknowledge that completion of Afghan presidential elections is a crucial step for political stability of Afghanistan and South Asian region,” the Spokesperson further said.

As per the preliminary results of Afghan Presidential Elections announced by the Chairperson of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Hawa Alam Nuristani in Kabul on Sunday, the incumbent President Ashraf Ghani won the polls with a slim majority.

The Afghan IEC Head Hawa Alam Nuristani told reporters that that Ashraf Ghani secured 50.64% votes while his main rival Abdullah Abdullah obtained 39.52% votes.

Abdullah Abdullah rejected the results, saying “The result that stands is based on fraud and without considering our legitimate demands, will never be accepted.”
