ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan on Friday welcomed the listing of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA), a Splinter group of outlawed terror outfit Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), by the United Nations Security Council.

In a statement issued in Islamabad on Friday, the Foreign Office said that the UN Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee yesterday (July 6, 2017) approved the addition of JuA in the list of entities and individuals subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.

“Pakistan had proposed this listing,” the Foreign Office said adding that the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar operates from Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan and has been involved in a series of terrorist attacks inside Pakistan.

“Pakistan had proscribed JuA last year,” it added.

On Thursday, the Security Council Committee approved the inclusion of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar to the Islamic State (also known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levan – ISIL) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List, subjecting it to assets freeze, travel ban and an arms embargo.

Jamaat-ul-Ahrar was formed in August 2014 in Mohmand agency and eventually banned by Pakistan from operating in its territory on November 21 last year for carrying out subversive activities.
