ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan has welcomed the passage of a motion at the United Kingdom’s Labour Party Annual Party Conference, standing by the Kashmiris in their demand for self-determination and holding of an impartial plebiscite under the UN Resolutions.
The emergency motion passed by the Labour Party on Wednesday called for the Opposition Leader Jeremy Corbyn to seek international observers to “enter” the Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IOJ&K) region and demand the right of self-determination for its people.
It called for intervention by Jeremy Corbyn to ensure someone from the Labour Party is represented to attend the United Nations Human Rights Council “to demand the restoration of basic human rights including the freedom of speech and communication, the lifting of curfews, and to allow the humanitarian aid organisation and international observers to enter the (Kashmir) region”.
“Accept that Kashmir is a disputed territory and the people of Kashmir should be given the right of self-determination in accordance with UN resolutions,” the resolution stated.
Meanwhile, Pakistan appreciated the UK Opposite Labour Party for passing a resolution demanding international intervention in IOJ&K, noting that it reaffirms Islamabad’s stance of resolving the Kashmir dispute under the UN resolutions.
However, India condemned the Labour Party’s resolution on Kashmir.
In a statement, the Spokesperson of Indian External Affairs Ministry Raveesh Kumar described the Labour Party’s move as “pandering to vote-bank interests”.
