Foreign OfficePakistan and India to sign Kartarpur agreement tomorrow

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan and India would sign the agreement on Kartarpur Corridor tomorrow (October 24, 2019), the Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said.

“We are fully ready to operationalize the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor on our side,” Dr Faisal told media representatives in his weekly held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Earlier the Kartarpur agreement between Pakistan and India had to be signed today; however, it was delayed over differences on US$20 levy fee, Islamabad wanted to charge Sikh Yatrees arriving from India.

The Foreign Office Spokesperson told media that once the agreement is signed, they will share the clause by clause details with them.

Dr Faisal said that Yatrees will be permitted to visit the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib from morning till evening. He said that specific details about the timings etc. would be released after signing of the agreement.

Currently, he added that, we are in the process of devising a mechanism to charge US$20 per visitor per visit as service charges.

Dr Mohammad Faisal said that media will be at the Zero Point tomorrow to cover the event.

Talking about the Afghan peace process, the Spokesperson said that Pakistan has been a part of all efforts and processes to discuss and facilitate peace and reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan. He said that Pakistan’s role is particularly noteworthy in crystalizing international convergence for a peaceful solution in Afghanistan.

The Spokesperson said that Pakistan had participated in the first round of four-party talks in Beijing in July 2019. The next round is being held in Moscow at an opportune moment as it would provide an important opportunity to review the currently stalled peace process, he said adding that Pakistan side will be represented by Additional Secretary (Afghanistan & West Asia) in the meeting.

“Pakistan will continue its effort, through wholehearted support as its part of shared responsibility, for making the international peace effort successful in Afghanistan,” he said.
