ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: In view of the upcoming presidential election and in support of domestic transition in Afghanistan, Pakistan has decided to enhance security along the Pak-Afghan border.
The Afghanistan’s fourth presidential election since the Taliban’s removal from power by a United States-led coalition in 2001 will be held on Saturday (September 28, 2019) amid security concerns over rising violence.
In a statement on Thursday, the Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said that as the neighboring Afghanistan witnesses another presidential polls on Saturday, a strict security check of all pedestrians and trading vehicles will be conducted from September 26 to 29.
The Spokesperson said that all passage ways/cargo terminals (except for emergency patients) will also be closed from September 27 to 28.
The 9.6 million registered voters in Afghanistan will use their right of franchise to elect their next president on Saturday from among 16 candidates for a five-year term amid threats by the Taliban of targeting election rallies and polling stations.
As per the Afghan Interior Ministry, over 72,000 security personnel would be deployed on election day to provide security to 49,402 polling booths across the Country.
