Foreign OfficePakistan announces its policy to refrain from US-Iran Standoff

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi has indicated that Pakistan would refrain from US-Iran Standoff and its soil will not be used against any other state, reports DND News Agency from Islamabad.

The Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan is very clear on its position that peace, stability and secure environment must prevail in the region.

Addressing Senate of Pakistan– which is Upper House of Pakistani Parliament, the foreign minister said that he has reiterated this to all stakeholders in my recent conversations.

“Active diplomacy to de-escalate tensions (in the region) is the need of the hour. Violence must be avoided. We’ll continue with efforts,” Qureshi said.

The foreign minister was alluding to his yesterday’s telephonic conversations with his Counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey on the unfolding situation in the region after the killing of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by the United States in Iraq.

Talking to them, Shah Mahmood Qureshi reaffirmed that Pakistan would neither let its soil to be used against any other state nor become part of any regional conflict.

Highlighting Pakistan’s deep concern over the recent developments, he also underscored the need of avoidance of conflict, exercise of maximum restraint and de-escalation of tensions.

Important point of his address to Senate:

  • The incident will further destabilise the region, especially the situation in Iraq and Syria
  • The crisis could have a negative impact on the Afghanistan peace process and Pakistan’s efforts in this regard could be undone
  • Route blockades could be enacted leading to breakage in oil supply, which will have a negative impact on the regional and global economy
  • The Iran nuclear deal has come under severe pressure with the latest announcements coming out of Iran suggesting Tehran has virtually backed out of the deal that put restrictions on the country’s Uranium enrichment
  • The situation has also impacted the Pakistani government’s efforts to unite the forum of OIC on the human rights violations in India-occupied Kashmir
  • India may pounce on the chance to destabilise Pakistan and conduct false-flag operations
