ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal government would establish about 3,390 family welfare centers across the country including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in order to further improve national demographic indicators during current financial year.

In this regard, the government has allocated Rs 15 billion in its Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2016-17 including the provincial resources for vertical programmes of population sector, said an official here on Tuesday.

Besides, the government would also establish 270 reproductive health centers and 370 mobile service units to provide better health facilities for the people living in for flung areas of the country particularly for women and children, he added.

He said, about 240 B-type reproductive health centers would also be established which would further strengthen the healthcare services for women and children in remote areas of the country.

Provincial governments are also taking several initiatives for population welfare even the Punjab government has created the Population Innovations Fund (PPIF), he said.

The Province of Punjab is also working on restructuring and reorganization of the regional training institutes, strengthening population welfare Training Institute (Lahore) and creating 12 family health clinics in different cities, he added.

The Sindh government was also working on a project `cost implementation plan (CIP) on family planning, Sindh (2015-20) with worth of US$ 1.4 billion, he added.

He said, it was also negotiating with donors including the World Bank, to fund this project partially.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) government will be establishing 418 family welfare centres by 2020, 10 mobile service units besides strengthening capacity of the provincial population welfare department.

The provincial government would also involve 1,050 Imams (prayer leaders) and religious scholars for promotion and advocacy of the population welfare programme, he added.
