ISLAMABAD: A two-member delegation of World Bank led by Country Director Rachid Benmessaoud called on Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad.

Talking to the delegation‚ the Finance Minister said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was determined to revive the economy of the Finance Minister said the country.

“Under the direction of prime minister, the government is utilising its potential to establish financial discipline,” he said.

Dar said that national interest was the guiding principle and all international institutions would be engaged in keeping with this objective.

The Finance Minister said that Pakistan and the World Bank have had a history of long association and expressed the confidence that this relationship would be mutually beneficial.

Benmessaoud said that the international community was quite optimistic about the positive developments in Pakistan after the new government of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz came into power.

The World Bank, he said, is ready to help Pakistan in the energy sector as well as revenue mobilisation, which are at the heart of the new government’s economic agenda.

Benmessaoud also floated the idea of regional energy cooperation and stressed on the need for connectivity with Central Asia and neighbouring countries so that the region could benefit from surpluses.

Dar directed the Economic Affairs Division to look into the proposals of the World Bank with a view how they could benefit Pakistan.
