Voting continues in NA-246 by-poll amid tight security

KARACHI, Pakistan: The voting continues for by-election in Karachi’s NA-246 constituency on Thursday amid strict security measures to ensure law and order for the polling.

There are 14 candidates in the run; however, the close contest is expected among three candidates – Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Kanwar Naveed Jameel, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Imran Ismail and Rashid Naseem of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI).

One of them will be elected by about 357,000 voters through using their right of franchise in the by-election.

A total of 213 polling stations have been established in the constituency while closed circuit cameras have also been installed and law enforcement personnel deployed in and outside the polling stations.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Sindh Police (IGP) Ghulam Haider Jamali visited various polling stations established in the NA-246 constituency.

The IG Sindh said while talking to media that polling is going on peacefully and smoothly in NA-246, adding that unprecedented security measures have been taken to avoid any untoward incident.

Earlier on Wednesday, the DG Rangers Sindh Major General Bilal Akbar also visited the said constituency and reviewed the security arrangements for by-elections.

The DG Rangers Sindh directed the Rangers to ensure free and transparent elections.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
